With its stunning scenery, world-class ski resorts, and diverse slopes, Switzerland is a top destination for skiers from all over the world. However, it can also come with a hefty price tag. But, did you know that it is possible to ski in Switzerland on a budget and still have an unforgettable experience? In our latest Ski Hostel newsletter, we'll share our top 5 tips and tricks to help you plan an affordable ski trip to the Swiss Alps. So, grab your skis and let's get started! 🎿
1. Look for package deals.
One of the best ways to save money while skiing in Switzerland is by looking for package deals. Many companies offer packages that include accommodation, lift tickets, and equipment rental at a discounted price. These packages can save you a significant amount of money compared to booking each component separately. They also save you a boatload of time since you literally just need to make one booking! When searching for package deals, look for deals offered by smaller companies that specialize in ski trips. Be sure to compare the cost of the package with the cost of booking each component separately to ensure you're getting the best deal.Ski Hostel is a great example of a company that specializes in budget friendly ski packages without sacrificing quality or comfort. Food, accommodation and ski passes are all included for significantly less than other providers in Switzerland. Plus we are a small team dedicated to ensuring you have an awesome experience!
2. Avoid eating on the slopes.
Eating out at ski resorts can quickly add up and become a significant expense during your ski trip. Swiss restaurant food can be seriously expensive and it's much better to save your money for the apres-ski bar. To save money on meals, consider avoiding eating at the slopes and instead bring your own lunch. This will not only save you money, but also give you more control over what you're eating and avoid any unwanted surprises on your bill.Making a few sandwiches at breakfeast and buying some granola bars from the local store is most likely your best bet.
3. Visit smaller resorts.
If you're looking for a more budget-friendly ski experience in Switzerland, consider visiting smaller, less popular ski resorts. These resorts tend to be less crowded and often offer more affordable options for accommodation and ski passes.Additionally, the slopes are often much quieter, making for a more relaxed and enjoyable ski experience. To find smaller ski resorts, research areas that are a bit further off the beaten path or look for resorts that are not as well-known to tourists.Ski Hostel aims to beat the crowds by visiting the ski areas of Liddes-Vichères, La Fouly and Champex-Lac. Not only do you enjoy a relaxing day on the slopes, but you get to visit 3 ski resorts in just 1 week!
4. Keep your rental costs down.
Renting ski equipment can be a significant expense during your ski trip to Switzerland, but there are ways to save money on this cost.Firstly, consider renting equipment from local sports shops rather than flagship stores, as they generally offer cheaper prices. Secondly, look for rental packages that include multiple items such as skis, boots, and poles, as these packages often offer a better value than renting each item separately. It often helps to have somebody you know and trust in resort to help you find the best deals. Here are Ski Hostel we're all about saving you time and money - we've already got special rates in place with the best providers so all our skiers get awesome equipment for a budget price!
5. Buy budget ski clothing.
Ski clothing can be expensive, but it is important to have proper gear to stay warm on the slopes. To save money on ski clothing, consider buying budget-friendly options that still provide the necessary insulation. Consider buying used gear from second-hand shops or online marketplaces, since it's often the case that good quality used gear is better than cheap quality new clothing. If you do buy from Amazon or other retailers, be sure to check independent reviews!Additionally, think about purchasing only the essential items you need, such as a warm jacket, pants, and gloves, and layering with clothing you already own. By following these tips, you can stay warm on the slopes without spending a fortune on ski clothing!
Question: What should I do if I fall while skiing?
Tumbling down the slopes like a human snowball? Don't worry, it's just a rite of passage for all ski beginners! The key to falling safely is to remain relaxed and not tense up your muscles. When you feel yourself losing balance, just accept that you're going to fall and don't try too hard to fight against gravity. The more you fight, the more embarrassing you will look.In my 10 years of teaching skiing, I have only ever seen 2 minor injuries in my classes. That's 1000's of ski lessons and only 2 injuries - the odds are very slim. This means that you should not feel afraid - fear will make it much more likely you will stiffen up and expose yourself to injury. Just relax and go with the flow!
